The institutional purpose of the Prince Sultan Military College of Health Sciences is to provide qualified students of diverse backgrounds with an excellent medical education within an atmosphere of academic integrity and scholarship that fosters the highest standards in professional ethics and competence. The principal function of the College is to educate and train High School Graduates (Science Stream), in order to become qualified medical technicians and serve in the different applied medical jobs of the Medical Services Divisions, and conducting military courses for (Officers, NCOs and Civilians) in several fields.

EMPLOYMENT PROJECTION FOR GRADUATES

The anesthesia technician (AT) or the anesthesia nursing diploma carrier is an integrated part of the health-care team, assigned to manage and care for the patients before, during, and after surgical procedures requiring anesthesia.
           
Under the supervision of an anesthetist, the main professional duties and services provided by the (AT) include:

i. Assisting the anesthetist in all functions related to anesthesia and  recovery and providing patient care and comfort.

ii. Preparing different tools and equipment for use in anesthesia or  intensive care, besides their calibration, maintenance and sterilization.

iii. Assisting with emergency procedures, e.g., doing CPR effectively as well as the ability to use advanced equipment for monitoring vital signs.

iv. Recording and requisitioning of drugs, especially anesthetic ones, as well as   the proper storing of drugs and different tools.

v. Taking some responsibility in regulating and maintaining operating suite, recovery areas, as well fulfilling some supervisory responsibilities, e.g., planning and monitoring of performance.


It is important to emphasize, that the (AT) is expected to work under the supervision of an anesthetist who is taking care of the patient.
        
In adherence with the Saudi laws and regulations the (AT) is not allowed to prepare or administer any I.V drug.
       
With advanced training and experience the (AT) may, if indicated, be able to carry out higher responsibilities under the direction and responsibility of an anesthetist.

THE STUDY PROGRAM

The duration of anesthesia technician (AT) program is 3.5 years it involves 12 months pre-clinical period, 2 years clinical course of study and 6 months hospital based practical internship program, leading to the award of a Diploma of Anesthesia technician at PSMCHS.
          
The graduate then may assume the role of a qualified, practical anesthesia technician in any anesthesia department.
           
Before entering the clinical period the student should follow a common course of study called the pre-clinical period. As a preparation for the clinical studies the pre-clinical period focuses on training in English language, biology, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and physics.

The AIC program involves a systematic study of the essential theoretical aspects, pertinent to anesthesia and intensive care profession. This is supported by a substantial degree of training and practical skills. The program also incorporates an element of patient management and quality assurance.


THE OBJECTIVES OF THE AIC DEPARTMENT

i. To create and provide appropriate learning experience (i.e. lecture, tutorial, practical and clinical practice).

ii. To provide the student with the necessary academic and occupational training, enabling him to achieve the recognized targets of competence, normally expected from the anesthesia technician.

iii. To develop professional attitudes and sound working practices after
        graduation.

iv. To encourage the student towards self-evaluation and self-improvement (i.e. professional development) not only at an undergraduate level, but also throughout his career in the field of anesthesia.

v. To develop awareness in the graduate student that the experience acquired at PSMCHS needs to be constantly and regularly updated and upgraded to meet medical advances in the field of anesthesia and intensive care as part of a program of continuing education.


AIMS AND GOALS OF AIC DEPARTMENT

The anesthesia technician curriculum is a major responsibility of the department of anesthesia at PSMCHS. In addition to directing the range and structure of the various services and clinical courses operated by the English, Sciences and other departments, the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Department (AIC) is entirely responsible for the content, preparation, selection, production and development of the relevant teaching materials, pertaining to its professional courses.

The AIC is also responsible for the selection and admission of successful pre-clinical students into the anesthesia technician clinical program, according to predetermined criteria, laid down by the departmental head and his clinical staff.


HIGHER EDUCATION PROSPECT FOR GRADUATES

The AIC students will be required to complete their study of anesthesia and intensive care in the following successive degrees:

• The anesthesia technology bachelor degree.

• The anesthesia technology and ICU high diploma degree.

• The anesthesia technology and ICU MSc degree.

• The anesthesia technology and ICU MD or PHD degree.
