DEPARTMENT

Health care systems and related industries are rapidly expanding which means that health care professionals must continually gain new knowledge, skills, and perspective.  The RSS&LSD has been established to advance our educational programs, and to respond to scientific development, and the educational needs of students and faculty.  The RSS&LSD is striving to create an academic environment in which students and staff to acquire new knowledge and skills in their respective fields of study.

Therefore, RSS&LSD places considerable emphasis on providing our students and faculty with the tools to conduct research.  The department organizes a wide range of lecture series and courses, conferences, symposia, workshops, and seminars as a part of the Educational Program.  Some of the activities are carried out in collaboration with the King Fahd Military Medical Complex hospital as well as neighboring health and other academic institutions in the Eastern Provinces.

The provision of research and scientific knowledge in PSMCHS relies on the underlying assumption that the research needs of students and faculty will be assessed.

MISSION

To disseminate information and provide knowledge about research and staff development in the field of education and health care research

MISSION STATEMENT

·      To assist Prince Sultan Military College of Health Sciences (PSMCHS) in achieving its mission and upgrading the educational level of students and faculty College wide.

·      To be the primary resource for PSMCHS in the dissemination of  information relating to research and  continuing education, training and service-related activities for the students, faculty, military and civilian staff of MSD hospitals kingdom wide.

·      To be committed to service excellence in all that it undertakes and to improve the academic standards, growth, and quality of graduates of PSMCHS, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

·      In collaboration with the Department of Academic Affairs, and health care institutions both in the Kingdom and abroad, this  Department has an important role in assisting students, faculty, military and civilian staff to achieve the following:

 

Þ    High quality academic programs that respond to social needs and which will enhance students’ opportunities for professional and social growth and development.

Þ    Promote awareness and increase the involvement of health care professionals in research and continuing educational activities.

Þ    Encourage staff participation in research and continuing  educational activities.

OBJECTIVES

1.          To contribute to the advancement of scientific studies and knowledge through active participation in training and      research projects;

2.          To introduce students and faculty to the principles and methods of basic educational and health research, biological and epidemiological studies and program evaluation; and

3.          To promote research activities by encouraging staff and interested individuals to undertake and participate in different research projects.

COMPONENTS OF THE RSS&LSD

 

1.   Research Component/Section

The involvement of research in education and Applied Health Sciences is an integral part of PSMCHS new initiatives and plan.  An initiative which will allow the College to develop and maintain its position as a center of excellence for Applied Health  Sciences (e.g. Anesthesiology & Intensive Care Technician, Dental Hygiene, Emergency Medicine Technology, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, and Physiotherapy and Radiology in the future.  We offer a wide range of research methods courses and Applied Medical Sciences lectures reflecting the spectrum of the College’s activities. We also formulate procedures for submission and review of research protocols and projects.

 

2.  Data Center and Staff Development (DC&SD)

The DC&SD component features the Data & Career Information Center, which houses all the information relating to professional and career development opportunities inside and outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  This section of the RSS&LSD helps students and faculty to acquire educational and professional information to enhance their skills, and explore educational and career opportunities inside or outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  In addition, the center provides professional development services such as exploring career options, learning to write résumés, curriculum vitae, cover letters, and interviewing skills.  RSS&LSD offers advice and assistance to students and faculty who are preparing for external examinations such as TOEFL and SAT.  Additionally, RSS&LSD offers consultation on writing research proposal and searching via Internet.

 

 

 

3. Library Services

The Library Services include both the College and Public   Library.  Its purpose is to ensure that the integrity of the book and periodical collection is maintained at the highest standard and quality; and as current as possible, so that users (especially faculty and students) will be provided with the highest quality education and health information.

1.0 Title

Circulation of Library Materials

2.0 Conditions

This Policy will apply to all library materials.

3.0 Statement of Purpose

To ensure that all library readers have equal access to library’s resources and that where an essential book is urgently needed, the reader will always be facilitated.

4.0 Policy

The College Library material, which is available for loan, may be borrowed by the staff of Prince Sultan Military College of Health Sciences and Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Staff of King Fahd Military Medical Complex. Other staff of King Fahd Military Medical Complex hospital may borrow at the discretion of the Librarian.

5.0 Procedure

5.1 The Library stock is divided into two categories, reference, and circulation. Reference material and journals  may not be borrowed.
5.2 The borrowing of books other than reference books, is encouraged for a maximum period of two weeks.
5.3 At the request of the Librarian, any item on loan must be returned immediately if another reader urgently  requires it.
5.4 A fine of SR 1.00 will be collected per day after the due date, in case of overdue books.
5.5 Readers who habitually fail to return books may have their borrowing privileges withdrawn by the Librarian.
5.6 The Librarian will not sign the Clearance Form of any reader who has failed to return any library item.

1.0 Title

General Library Rules

2.0 Location

The Prince Sultan of Military College of Health Sciences Library is located on the Ground Floor of the College Building in Room G-085.

3.0 Library Hours
Saturday – Wednesday 7:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Thursday 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
Friday Closed

4.0 Library Rules

4.1 All the readers who come to the Library must sign in and out.
4.2 Smoking and Easing are NOT allowed in the Library.
4.3 Each user is enjoined to observe complete silence.
4.4 Each user must leave any materials, which have been used on the table. It the duty of the library staff to return them to the shelves.
4.5 Borrowing books for somebody else is not allowed.
4.6 Library Hours should be observed.
4.7 Internet booking rules should be observed.

5.0 Circulation

5.1 The Library stock is divided into two categories, reference and lending. Reference materials may not be borrowed.
5.2 Load period is as follows:
Student, College and Hospital Staff - Two weeks
Instructors - One Semester
5.3 Readers/students can check out a maximum of two (2) books at a time and Instructors can check out ten (10) books for a Semester.
5.4 Loaned materials may be recalled if they are required by another reader. Loans may be renewed for further period subject to immediate recall if required by another reader.
5.5 Readers who fail to return Library materials promptly when requested to do so, may be referred to Head of Research and Continuing Education and/or Assistant Director, Applied Medical Sciences. Their borrowing privileges may be withdrawn and appropriate action taken.
5.6 A fine of SR 1.00 per book per day will be levied after due date, in case overdue books.

6.0 Lost and Damaged Library Materials

Any book or library item that has been damaged or lost by a borrower, the rules are as follows:
6.1 For negligible writing just one or two places for small marking, scratches, etc. on the preliminary pages or on the textual pages without any loss to textual matter, the reader will be excused after warning.
6.2 If the book is damaged by marking, spots, scratches, etc. about ten percent (10%) of the book without any loss to textual matter, i.e. visible, SR 100.00 of fine will be collected from the defaulter.
6.3 More than ten percent (10%) of the book is damaged by marking, tea and water spots, scratches, etc. without any loss to textual matter, the borrower must pay complete price of the book plus freight charges.
6.4 Any loss to the any number of pages to the textual matter except preliminary pages and no more useful those pages or either by wear and tear or by making or spots, etc., the reader has to replace the book or has to pay its price along with freight charges.
(In such cases, it would be better to ask the defaulter to replace the book instead of collecting money. If he could not then, he must pay the price of the book plus freight charges).

9.0 The Card Catalogue

The card catalogue is an index to the entire collection in the Library. Items are filed alphabetically by author, title and subject or subjects covered. More details on how to use the card catalogue is found on top of the card catalogue cabinet.

10.0 Book Reservation

If the book you intend to borrow has already been checked out, you may reserve it by completing a reservation slip at the Library Circulation Desk. As soon as the book you have reserved is returned, you will be notified by the Librarian. The book will be held for you for a minimum of three (3) days.

11.0 Classification Scheme

The Dewey Decimal System of Classification is used in coding the library materials. Through this system of classification, books are properly arranged on the shelves. The ten main classes are as follows:

• 100-199 Philosophy
• 200-299 Religion
• 300-399 Social Science
• 400-499 Language
• 500-599 Pure Science
• 600-699 Technology
• 700-799 Arts
• 800-899 Literature
• 900-999 General Geography & History
