Respiratory Care

In recent years, changes in the socio‑economic climate in developing, as well as developed countries have influenced governments, state ministries and health departments to expand allied health‑care provision to their citizens. As part of this expansion in medical auxiliary services, the respiratory care practitioner is a specialized and highly trained member of the health‑care team.

He/ she is involved in a variety of health‑care settings, providing life‑saving and life‑support care to patients ranging from premature infants to the very old. Working as a key member of the hospital critical‑care team, the respiratory care practitioner is often the first medical specialist, who is summoned to give emergency treatment to acute respiratory conditions, caused by injuries to the head or chest, or to those with lung disorders such as asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis and bronchitis.

Working with patients, either at home or in the hospital, he/she not only provides treatment and medication under the direction of a treated physician, but also assists in health‑care education programs, designed to enhance awareness in the community of respiratory diseases, its causes and treatment. An important member of the respiratory care team in the hospital is the Respiratory Therapist or Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).

Respiratory Care Practitioner

The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) is an integral part of the health‑care team, assigned to manage and care for the patient at the bedside. Under the supervision of a treated physician and/or Respiratory Therapist, the main professional duties and services provided by the RCP include:

I.          The administration of medical gases, air and oxygen to the patient, monitoring of hyperbaric oxygen and control of humidity/aerosol therapy.

II.        Timely application of breathing treatments and exercises, (e.g., ventilatory control, chest physiotherapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the administration of pharmacological agents).

III.       The monitoring and operation of equipment, (i.e. mechanical ventilatory support systems, blood gas analyzers and computerized pulmonary function testing equipment).

IV.       The decontamination and sterilization of equipment in accordance with hospital infection‑control guidelines.

V.         Regular preventive maintenance of essential equipment according to standard procedures, outlined by the hospital biomedical/bio‑engineering department.

VI.      Active participation in continuing education, quality assurance and orientation programs, covering patient care, documentation, emergency procedures, etc.
